Sorting & Grouping
Once your data is filtered, the Sort / Group tab dictates exactly how the remaining rows are organized and presented on the canvas.
Revit uses a strict, top-down hierarchy for sorting, and Vellum mimics this exact logic but wraps it in a cleaner, more fluid interface.
Creating a Sorting Hierarchy
Section titled “Creating a Sorting Hierarchy”Sorting rules are evaluated sequentially. The first rule you add acts as the primary grouping (e.g., grouping everything by Level). The second rule acts as the secondary grouping (e.g., sorting by Family Type within each Level), and so on.
Sort / Group
Grouping Options
Section titled “Grouping Options”When you add a Sort Rule, Vellum allows you to inject structural formatting directly into your schedule to break up large walls of data:
- Sub-Header: Injects a dedicated row above a new group of items, displaying the parameter name (e.g., a bold header row that says “Level 1”).
- Sub-Footer: Injects a dedicated row below a group of items. This is particularly useful when combined with the Math tab to display subtotals.
- Blank Line: Injects an empty row between groups, giving your schedule breathing room and making it easier to read on printed sheets.
Itemize Every Instance
Section titled “Itemize Every Instance”At the bottom of the Sorting tab, you will find the global Itemize every instance toggle. This functions exactly as it does in native Revit:
- Toggled ON (Default): Every single element in your project will occupy its own row on the schedule, regardless of your sorting rules.
- Toggled OFF: Vellum will analyze your active Sort Rules. If multiple elements share the exact same values for those sorted parameters, they will be compressed into a single row, and their numerical values (like Cost or Area) will be summed together.
