Formats (Conditional Formatting)
The Formats tab allows you to apply conditional formatting to your schedule. Just like conditional formatting in Excel, this tab constantly monitors your Revit data and automatically applies visual overrides when specific conditions are met.
Revit’s native Conditional Formatting is incredibly limited—it only allows you to change background colors. Vellum completely overhauls this, allowing for intelligent data tracking and visual overrides.

Types of Formatting
Section titled “Types of Formatting”When adding a rule, you can apply one (or both) of the following visual overrides:
1. Cell Coloring
Section titled “1. Cell Coloring”Click the color swatch to define a background color. Vellum automatically calculates the contrast and adjusts the text inside the cell (light or dark) so your data remains perfectly legible.
- Use Case: Set a rule where
[Fire Rating] is Emptyturns the cell red. This acts as an instant visual QA/QC tool, allowing you to quickly scan your schedule for missing data before plotting sheets.
2. Text Replacement
Section titled “2. Text Replacement”This is a feature entirely missing from native Revit. Text Replacement allows you to swap out the raw Revit data string for a specific character or phrase without actually modifying the Revit parameter.
- Use Case: Instead of showing “Yes” or “No” in a hardware schedule, you can use Text Replacement to show a clean bullet point (
●) or checkmark (✔) when a value equals “Yes”.
Cascading Rules
Section titled “Cascading Rules”Like sorting, formatting rules are applied top-to-bottom. If two rules conflict on the same cell, the rule lowest on the list (the one added most recently) will take priority.
